An incredible piece of early Meiji era Japnese cloisonne. It is a cylinder shaped vase or brush washer with floral designs and butterflies set against a orange red background. This background is accomplished by letting the metal base show through under clear coats of enamel. In person it literally shines in the light. In the top border there 3 Paulownia leaf designs in the 5-3 pattern. This indicates the vase was made for a noble Japanese family or high ranking government official. This vase may be an example of early work by the master Namikawa Yasuyuki. The orange red background can be found on many of his early pieces. The last picture I have provided is a side by side comparison of this vase to one in the collection of the V&A museum.
Excellent original condition. Has some very minor abrasions and pinpoint enamel losses to surface that is normally associated with an antique piece of cloisonne. Overall it is beautiful with vibrant colors and no damage.
