Overview:
This is a vase
made for tea ceremony to be used as
a hanging vase or a small vase placed on a plat place (photo #1).
It was produced by a top-notch potter (
SUGIMOTO Sadamitsu / 杉本貞光 in Japanese) living in Shigaraki. He has been producing the first class Shigaraki-ware or Iga-ware (*)
tea utensils.
*
Shigaraki-ware / Iga-ware is a s
toneware,
which are made of a special clay (available in Shigaraki / Iga area) and baked at very high
temperature (1,200~1,300 degrees Celsius). It does not use or apply any glaze before baking. The glaze is naturally formed in the kiln when certain conditions met from ash of red pine tree and feldspar contained in the clay. Thus, it looks very natural and primitive. And not sure how it looks until it comes out from the kiln.
Stoneware is still produced in Japan, because it is loved by the people who practice tea ceremony.
He drew the words Shigaraki (信楽) and Vase (花入) as well as his name (貞光) at the bottom of the original box (photo #11).
Meanwhile, the former chief abbot of Daitoku-Ji temple (TACHIBANA Daiki / 立花大亀 in Japanese) gave a title or name "Iga Udukumaru (伊賀 うづくまる)" to this vase and drew it with the potter's name Sadamitsu (貞光) in cursive on the surface of the lid, and signed at the back of the lid (photo #11).
Udukumaru means "pray standing on knees with pleasure".
Given this vase was made a top-notch potter artist and named by
the former chief abbot of Daitoku-Ji temple, it
(with its original wooden box) is considered as a perfect tea utensil. Very attractive and precious!!
